Develop your child’s language skills at an early age
Research has shown that babies should be exposed to books as early as the age of 6 months and it will not be long before they become avid readers. This helps in developing language skills and vocabulary and this will further lead to good academic success. Nursery rhymes, action songs and music are also a very good means of language and over all development of the child. In addition to the obvious knowledge of new words and knowledge of the environment around us, they are are good means of teaching the child how to co-ordinate they body and language. They also help the child to chanelise their energies into positive channels.

Baby proofing your home
There are many points to be kept in mind when baby proofing your home. Are electric points and wire out of the child’s reach , are precious items out of his reach, do I have any furniture with sharp edges. A good way to check is to crawl on your fours and see things at the child’s level. Try and avoid the child from entering the kitchen. Even in the child’s nursery don’t keep stuffed toys when the child is unattended. Be careful about the cords of the blinds. Shorten them in length. Make your child sleep in a sleeper rather than with a blanket. Place child-resistant covers on all electrical outlets. Install safety gates at the top and bottom of the stairs. Use corner bumpers on furniture. Make a netted mess between banister posts.

The link between music and maths
Your child’s mathematical abilities can be developed at a early age. Research has proved that same parts of the brain were active when listening to Mozart as when doing puzzles and playing chess, suggesting that music is like warm-up exercises for the brain. It is believed that the effects of music on a child are even effective when a mother listens to music with the child in her womb. Mozart has mastered it in the music effect.

Don’t say “ NO” rather give an explanation
Remember if a child is not having fun he is not learning anything. Discipline in a child is very important. But rather than a constant “NO” to the child a much more positive attitude would be to give an explanation. Research has shown that positive feedback to a child rather than a negative “ no” has a much more healthy contribution to a child’s personality and his language skills.
